Machine and device security documents in accordance with the EU authoritative regulations

When Finland signed the ETA-treaty, she pledged to accommodate her legislation on the part of machine safety to equal EU’s machine directives. The basis is EU’s machine directive 89/392/ETY (presently used 98/37/EY, newest 2006/42/EY up to 29.12.2009) machine safety, which in Finland is corresponded by the government decision (VNp 1314/94, changes 1104/1999 and 765/2000) of machine safety (machine resolution). In addition there is an abridged group of directives, which are equally demanding, but do not concern all machines. The directives apply to homeland as well as other ETA-areas where machines are sold or produced. Also, machines coming to the company’s own use belong to the areas of these directives. The standards are arranged guides, which provide a practical safety level in accordance with the directives, when they are followed accordingly.

In everyday life, the obligations apply to the machine, or the machine line engineer and producer, so that the following actions and affiliated documents are required from them:

Identification of the applied directives and standards, according to which the following actions are to be completed:

  • Mapping/ surveying elements of danger ( a complete production line or a single machine/device)
  • Risk assessments
  • Required actions for controlling risks
  • Declaration of conformity
  • CE-sign and other apparatus plates
  • Product’s manual and maintenance instructions
  • Computing: centre of gravity’s decrees, crashing check-ups
  • Sizing: force-, motion-, and position sizing, sizing of structure and structure parts, sizing of work-machines and lifting utilities, etc.

It is reasonable to individually mention the so-called

Compilation of explosion-proof documents based on ATEX- directives

They apply to devices, as well as the environment and employees.

Unfortunately, machine-safety is often not taken seriously enough. Usually the reason for this is lack of information. Failure to obey safety regulations can lead to large and unpredictable financial expenses; in the worst case, it can lead to the loss of something much valuable than money: the loss of human lives.
